Writer entrepreneurs need to use many tactics to raise their profile. A public speaking career is a way to do this. It can also be lucrative in itself. For self publishers, public speaking is a great way to sell books. This group is for those who are speakers, who want to learn about speaking and who are interested in ways to create a speaking platform.

For those of you interested in getting paid to speak and increasing your platform through public speaking, we have a special program for you. The Las Vegas Convention Speaker's Bureau owner, Robin Jay, is offering listings in her speakers bureau to those who qualify. In addition I will be doing a webinar with her on monetizing your writing and speaking career. She is also adding a lot of freebies such as teaching you how to do captivating releases that get read. I am learning a lot from her about promotion. She is a supporter of Writer Entrepreneur and will be guest blogging. If you are ready to take the next step take a look at this link and what she is offering. http://lvcsb.com/author-

Deborah, I enjoy writing; I equally enjoy public speaking in various forms and formats (and am a Distinguished Toastmaster as a result). Looking forward to advice on where to speak, whom to speak…Continue
Comment by Rosanne Catalano (Umland) on October 23, 2012 at 10:40am Deborah, I joined your group because, so far, I have not done any public speaking because speaking in front of a large group of people scares me; and I want to learn how to overcome my fear of public speaking. Thanks for creating this informative group!
Comment by Deborah Herman on October 23, 2012 at 11:49am Although we will get more info from the experts as to the best ways to learn public speaking, I have been an active member of toastmasters for over a year and it has helped improve my speaking immensely. I have also seen many people go from totally shy to unstoppable. It is an international organization so check out if there is a club in your area. We will also add some tutorials here to help you on your way.
Comment by Barbara McDowell Whitt on October 23, 2012 at 1:25pm Deborah, thank you for starting this group. It should be an adventuresome group. Like many others, I have been speaking in front of groups for most of my life. I like your suggestion to Rosanne that she should look for a Toastmasters group. My husband found the group he belonged to to be very supportive. When I was 15 another girl and I worked with our 4-H club leader to memorize the words of a team demonstration for the county fair and were proud of our blue ribbons. As a single woman I spent four years from 1968 to 1972 traveling in nine states and speaking to college classes and teachers' groups on topics related to the teaching of reading.

Comment by Michael Taillard on October 23, 2012 at 6:31pm Public speaking is easy. It takes some practice, but it's not so hard even to get public speaking gigs. The real hard part is getting paid for it. I still haven't quite figured out how to turn public speaking into income, except through book promotion.
Comment by Dan T. Davis on October 23, 2012 at 8:57pm Become a deacon at your church, then do lay sermons. Oh, well, that's how I got started doing public speaking. YMMV.
Comment by Richard P. Moffa on October 23, 2012 at 9:35pm Deborah, you group sounds interesting. I've done a good deal of public speaking/presentation related to my former career in environmental/hazardous waste management. I'm now retired, but I'm certainly open to opportunities, particularly related to my writing and the historical context of my two published books (WWII).
Comment by Doreen Roberts Hight on October 24, 2012 at 12:25am I've done quite a bit of public speaking but I'm always interested in learning more about the opportunities available. One never stops learning in this business.
Comment by Dr. Gunnar Hauk Gjengset on October 24, 2012 at 4:09am Deborah - as a professional lecturer, mostly at colleges and universities, I have long since reached an understanding of my role as part of the entertainment industry. Thus, you have to develop an outstanding knowledge of the handling of janitors - they own The Hand That Rocks the Switch. And without all your electronic gadgets ...
Comment by Mark Lewis on October 24, 2012 at 11:09am I have been doing some sort of public speaking all my life. Lecturing, performing on stage and chattering to large crowds all day at trade shows and exhibitions. It holds no fear for me and it is natural as breathing. And yet I am terrified to speak to people one on one that I don't know especially on the telephone. I tend to avoid strangers. I have no idea why.
